1) Спортивная командная игра с мячом и битой [ bat], имеющая сходство с русской лаптой. В каждой команде на поле по 9 человек. Списочный состав профессиональной команды - 25-30 человек. Победителем считается команда, набравшая к концу игры большее количество перебежек-очков, зарегистрированных 4 судьями. В случае ничьей назначаются дополнительные иннинги [ inning], пока одна из команд не добьется победы. Матч может продолжаться столько времени, сколько потребуется на завершение 9 подач с 6 аутами в каждой. Игра заканчивается, если команда "гостей" завершила свою половину 9-го иннинга, а команда хозяев поля ведет в счете, а также по завершении 9-го иннинга при счете в пользу гостей. Бейсбол - национальный вид спорта, любимая зрелищная игра американцев [ Great American Sport]. Изобретение игры в 1839 приписывается генералу Даблдею [Doubleday, Abner], а многие из правил были предложены Картрайтом [Cartwright] из нью-йоркского бейсбольного клуба "Никербокер" [Knickerbocker Baseball Club], основанного в 1845.
